Joy Nott brings over 20 years of experience in customs compliance to the I.E.Canada team. Prior to joining I.E.Canada, Joy was a vice president and managing consultant for JPMorgan Global Trade Management Services specializing in matters of customs and international trade for both Canada and U.S. based clients.
Prior to joining J.P.Morgan, Joy spent a number of years developing her expertise as a Senior Manager with the public accounting firms of KPMG LLP and with Deloitte & Touche LLP as a Customs and International Trade consultant where she advised multinational clients on meeting import and export requirements while minimizing costs. Her experience with professional tax and supply chain advisers has given her a background rich in understanding how customs and trade issues play an important role in developing corporate strategies.
Joy joined the professional accounting firms after 10 years of varied experience in senior management roles with well-established customs brokers/freight forwarders. Joy has attained her professional customs brokerage status.
Carol is a lawyer with over 20 years experience in customs and international trade law. Prior to joining I.E.Canada, Carol spent 12 years in private practice as an associate and partner with an international law firm. In addition to working in Toronto, she spent almost five years in the firm’s northern Mexico offices, where she was instrumental in developing the local customs and foreign trade practice.
Carol has worked as a consultant on projects relating to trade facilitation and customs reform in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as border enforcement of intellectual property rights.
Carol represents I.E.Canada on the Border Commercial Consultative Committee established by the Canada Border Services Agency, as well as numerous CBSA-private sector subcommittees and working groups. She also consults regularly with other government agencies and departments, including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Health Canada and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada. Carol currently serves on the steering committee of the Canadian Anti-Counterfeiting Network, a non-profit coalition of stakeholders united in the fight against product counterfeiting and copyright piracy.
Carol was admitted to practice in Ontario in 1990. A native of Newfoundland, she is a graduate of Dalhousie Law School (LL.B., 1988) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; an honours graduate (economics) of McGill University (B.A., 1983) in Montreal; and a graduate of Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific (I.B., 1980), an international college in British Columbia, Canada. She also studied international economics and trade policy at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland (1985).
Keith is a consumer product and food safety specialist with over 30 years experience in food manufacturing, marketing, supply chain management and regulatory affairs. Prior to joining I.E.Canada, Keith held corporate management positions with Kraft-General Foods, Labatt Brewing Company, the Weston Foods Group and Cadbury Schweppes.
In his role with I.E.Canada, Keith works closely with Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Agriculture Canada, Environment Canada and the U.S. FDA and USDA to advance the interests of the food import and export sectors.
In 2010 Keith was appointed by Health Canada to co-chair the Health Canada Food Regulatory Advisory Committee. Since 2007 he has served as the food industry’s advisor to the Health Canada Environmental Assessment Working Group and as the industry’s representative on the National Chemicals Management Plan Stakeholder Advisory Council. He represented the Canadian food sector on the Standards Council of Canada multi-stakeholder groups that developed the Canadian national standard for the labelling of genetically engineered foods, the production and labelling of organic food and food safety.
Keith often serves as an intermediary between government regulators and food importers to help resolve import and enforcement issues with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency or Canada Border Services Agency.
Recognized nationally as a consensus builder and adult educator, Keith has led numerous workshops on food safety and nutrition, emergency preparedness, avian and pandemic influenza preparedness and foot and mouth disease. He is co-author of the Supply Chain Food Product Recall Manual and the Importers Food Safety Workbook and has trained over 3,000 Canadian food professionals on food safety best practices and offers food recall training courses annually.
A graduate of the University of Waterloo, Keith holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and is frequently consulted as the food industry expert on biotechnology.
Amesika Baëta has been with the I.E.Canada team for three years. Prior to joining I.E.Canada, Amesika was a trade assistant for the U.S. Commercial Service at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto assisting U.S. exporters and Canadian importers in doing business together in Ontario. For two years, Amesika was also a bilingual social policy researcher at SPR Associates Inc. In her position, Amesika assisted the SPR team in the assembly and execution of a variety of different provincial and national research studies.
Amesika has a Masters of Arts in international development, specializing in development management, from the Institute for Development Policy and Management at the University of Manchester, UK. She has also attained a Certificate in business management from the G. Raymond Change School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University. In 2004, Amesika graduated from Victoria College at the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in international relations and minors in political science and art history.
James Sutton, Coordinator - Quebec Chapter
James brings over 20 years of experience in customs brokerage and trade operations. Prior to joining the I.E.Canada team, James worked with well known Canadian companies such as Cole International, Livingston International, Carson International and Affiliated Customs Brokers where he served in various roles including customs consulting, customs broker and import analyst.
Over the course of many years James developed his knowledge and experience in customs operational and compliance matters working side by side with clients to overcome technical challenges and enhance their international trade activities. From small start-ups to large multinational clients and their supply chain partners, James has tackled issues spanning the customs brokerage spectrum. Fluently bilingual, James regularly served as intermediary between clients and government officials in Quebec.

Andrea MacDonald, Communications
Andrea MacDonald has over 20 years experience in writing and communications. She has written extensively on trade and transporation issues, technology, international development and business in both Canada and the U.S. Her work has appeared in publications such as World Trade Magazine, the Globe & Mail, Maclean Hunter's PLANT Magazine, Property and CME's 20/20. In addition to her published work, Andrea has handled communciations projects for Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, PBB Global Logistics (now Livingston International), Tri-Media Integrated Marketing & Technologies, Purolator Courier and Magpie Media.
Prior to joining I.E.Canada, Andrea was the lead policy researcher for the Science Council of British Columbia and the Communications Manager of the Canadian Manufacturing Advanced Technology Exchange.
